Tyrone Cherry III has been working for years providing education and space to learn about urban agriculture. From community gardens to farmers markets he has created several huge initiatives, such as the Petersburg League of Urban Growers, around getting better more nutrient dense food to our people. His new initiative is no different. Partnering with Agrarian Trust and Duron Chavis, Tyrone is spear heading the Petersburg Oasis Youth Farm. This project is a 5-acre parcel of land being built to cultivate learning and growing in an area known for being a food desert. The plan is to provide a youth farm for children to come learn, an incubator for future farmers, and a farmer’s market where people can come shop. The youth farm is very critical to them being that the land is adjacent to a neighboring middle school. They are currently holding intentional workshops that introduce the little ones to more intentional and connected ways of being. Cherry is putting a HUGE emphasis on community involvement and working together to make this dream a reality. The site is already underway with a chicken coup, compost station, and children’s space. We're excited to see what he does next.
