Owner of Deerehaven Farm Chip Powell has been growing since the 1980’s. Starting as an urban farmer in Philadelphia, Chip moved to Virginia in 2006 with his wife and they built their house on a 11.5-acre plot of land. Growing in everything from high tunnels, to raised beds, to containers; Chip holds classes to show other people how to grow successfully in any setting. At Deerehaven growing naturally is a priority and most of the growing practices used are organic. Chip starts seedlings in the green house and then grows using 20 raised beds as well as in the field with plastic and drip irrigation. They have a variety of all season vegetables and herbs and achieve this with the warmer high tunnel capabilities. Deerehaven sells their produce and seedlings on farm by appointment and at the Portsmouth Olde Towne Farmers’ Market. Chip has a passion for the community and aspires for people to know who their farmer is and where their food comes from. He makes an effort not to turn anyone away at the farmer’s market and makes it a priority to keep his people fed. Deerehaven has two CSA’s, sells retail, wholesale, and does custom growing. Whatever you need, Deerehaven can grow.
